The die is cast now, they make way for the land.
Steel is forged in the heart of everyman.
Cold, wet and dark, waiting for their final call, asking in silent prayer:
“How many men will fall”?
Their blood runs cold and dark in fields across the land.
That's the price that's paid when freedom takes a stand.
Facing the hellfire from the cliffs and the sky,
Charging across the sand, screaming their battle cry:
“Live free or die!”
For everyman
“Live free or die!”
Shooting, mining, shelling,
It's madness come alive.
One thought drives them forward;
“Live free or die”
So many years now since that fateful day,
Stars of David and crosses mark where many lay.
To pay the debt we owe them…it's futile but we try.
They gave their last full measure on the day they gave their lives.
Their blood runs cold and dark in fields across the land.
That's the price that's paid when freedom takes a stand.
Facing the hellfire from the cliffs and the sky,
Charging across the sand screaming their battle cry:
“Live free or die!”
For everyman
“Live free or die!”
Some background information about the song "Operation Overlord":
In his book, D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II, historian Stephen E. Ambrose wrote of the Allied Forces that fought that battle; “when the test came, when freedom had to be fought for or abandoned , they fought. They were soldiers of democracy.”
Furthermore, as noted by Carlo D'Este in his work; The D-Day Companion, in his June 6, 1944 address to the Allied forces, General Dwight D. Eisenhower told the troops; “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere are with you”
Many of those who fought made it home, too many did not. This song was written in a humble effort to pay tribute to both groups.
