(Inspired by the writings of Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard)
Life or death; heaven or hell,
the faithful think they know it well
The way of ease or the way of strife,
this moment is their entire life.
But when they are asked, they do not know
and so their fear and trembling grow
There are those who resign their souls
To do a good deed is their unspoken goal,
They listen to the pious talk then go outside and walk the walk. Religion is easy, faith is hard.
Standing high atop the cliff
Back is safe and front is "if"
Moving back you have no angst,
Forward may be filled with pangs,
Jumping back is the safest ground
Jumping out means your faith is bound
There are those who resign their souls
To do a good deed is their unspoken goal,
They listen to the pious talk then go outside and waste it all.
Religion is easy, faith is hard.
There are those who are in the vain realm,
with ego appearances at their helm,
passively nodding as the preachers speak,
then leave the pew and sin all week.
They don't even doubt, 'cause they don't care
They're too busy grooming their hair.
And there are those who faithfully live,
neither doubt nor reason, do they give.
Life or death; heaven or hell
The faithful think they know it well
But when they are asked they do not know
And so their fear and trembling grow
There are those who resign their souls
To do a good deed is their immodest goal,
They listen to the pious talk then go outside and walk the walk.
Religion is easy, faith is hard.
Just as the tides ebb and flow,
when your faith recedes the fear and trembling grows
If your faith is tested, how will you proceed,
to save your empty soul, how would you plead?
If your faith is tested, how will you proceed,
to save your empty soul, how would you plead?
They don't know the answer to "Why?"
And thus they jump out from on high.
The day when asked “what they have reaped?”,
in silent smiles they take their leap.
